How To Move A Robot In Sand – Remember Rhex?

Remember Rhex?  Boston Dynamics

Researchers have created a Rhex-like robot for the sand. They’ve found that when the robot slowed it’s legs down just before they hit the sand, the legs didn’t sink into the sand as much and were able to move forward at over one body length per second. Previous tests without the slowing only dug a whole. The researchers learned by watching animals indigenous to sandy areas.
